What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is a common condition in people of all ages. It causes swelling of the thin, clear layer that covers the white of your eye and lines your eyelid (the conjunctiva). Most people with conjunctivitis will have a red eye or eyes, with a watery discharge that can make them stick together. That’s why it’s also known as Pink Eye.

Viruses and bacteria are the most common infectious causes of conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is the most frequent cause observed more frequently during summer and spring. Although it is usually a relatively minor health problem, it can have a significant impact on your daily life and work.
